In considering dental treatment, which may include removal and replacement of “silver” mercury amalgam fillings in your mouth, several points have been discussed.

The following are well established facts in scientific literature:

  1. There is no level of mercury exposure that can be regarded as safe or harmless.
  2. When originally placed “silver” amalgam fillings contain approximately 50% mercury.
  3. Mercury is not “locked in” fillings and does escape in small amounts, mostly in the form of volatilized mercury vapor.
  4. Exposure to mercury increases with chewing, tooth brushing and heat.
  5. Mercury vapor is extremely toxic and easily absorbed. It’s toxicity is rated greater than lead, cadmium or arsenic.
  6. Leading toxicologists have concluded that mercury from amalgam fillings constitutes the single greatest source of exposure to humans and is greater than food, air or environmental sources.
  7. Animal studies have shown amalgam derived mercury accumulates in the body tissues and organs, it also travels through fetal blood supply to fetal tissues and is found in maternal milk.

Escondido holistic dentist, Dr. Jeffry Kerbs, has not placed a mercury filling in his practice for over 30 years and practices the safe removal of mercury fillings as laid out by the IAOMT.

Are amalgam fillings plaguing the health of your mouth and body? Escondido holistic dentist, Dr. Jeffry Kerbs, hasn’t placed an amalgam filling since 1985. Since this time he has been removing amalgam fillings safely with all of the necessary safety protocols including a rubber dam to isolate the tooth from the mouth, high-speed evacuation, oxygen mask to cover the nose and room air filtration.

Amalgam fillings are filled with mercury, a known poison. Amalgam fillings are not bonded to the surrounding tooth, causing the amalgam filling to separate from the remaining tooth which allows for microleakge of bacteria under the filling. As a result of the microleakage, Dr. Kerbs finds cavities under the amalgam fillings over 80% of the time. Amalgam fillings corrode and expand/contract over time, causing the tooth around the filling to crack and fracture which weakens the natural tooth structure and can lead to large pieces of the tooth to break. Mercury is constantly being released into the mouth and body when amalgam fillings are present.

Dr. Kerbs replaces amalgam fillings with tooth colored composite fillings. Dr. Kerbs uses the strongest and safest material available to sculpt the tooth back to its original shape. Composite fillings bond the tooth back together to increase the tooth’s strength by 85-95% and when placed correctly they have superior function.

Dr. Kerbs only utilizes the highest quality, non-toxic materials in his practice of dentistry, but what he wants his patients to understand is that technique is equally as important as safe materials. Dr. Kerbs is a conservative dentist. What this means to his patients is that he will never remove any tooth structure that doesn’t absolutely need to be removed. How this applies to removal of mercury fillings is that Dr. Kerbs will never cut down any unnecessary tooth structure when replacing amalgam fillings.
